Why Might I Need Oral Surgery?
While oral surgery isn’t the most common type of dental procedure we perform, there are several reasons why a person might need to have surgery.
One of the most common types of oral surgery is wisdom tooth extraction. Because wisdom teeth tend to grow improperly and become impacted into the gum line, which can lead to crowding and space issues with the rest of the teeth and has a potential for infection and other oral health issues, they tend to need to be surgically removed.
This type of wisdom tooth removal is done under local anesthesia, and typically only one or two of the teeth are removed at a time to allow for proper healing, and the patient can still talk and chew. It is possible to perform some of these surgeries with a laser, which minimizes the damage to the oral tissue, reduces the risk of infection, and speeds recovery.
Other issues that may require surgery include a cleft lip or palate that has to be surgically corrected, ankyloglossia (tongue-tie syndrome), and some cases of temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) also require surgery.
